"You should wait until after the holidays to shop."

POSTED ON NOVEMBER 10, 2023

The myth

When the year comes to an end, retailers typically clear their inventory to make way for new products. They run clearance sales so people will buy what’s left from Christmas off their shelves.

These discounted prices and the relative calm of after-Christmas shopping draw customers in even after the festive season is over.

The reality

Christmas shopping is often associated with long lines, crowds, and heavy traffic. If you’re shopping online, there’s also the risk of delivery delays due the holiday rush.

Clearance sales will be your best option if there are things on your wish list that can wait until after December. When choosing whether to shop before or after Christmas, here are some things to keep in mind:

• Stock availability

Retailers frequently stock up on items before the holidays to accommodate increased demand. Even when things run out, they may not restock until next year.

This is something to think about if you want to buy something in high demand during a clearance sale. There's also no guarantee that the things you want will be sold at bargain prices, especially if there are more people willing to pay full price.

• Quality

Clearance items are typically overstock or returns from prior seasons. Buying cheap can sometimes mean sacrificing quality.

Remember to inspect the items in your cart carefully because clearance items may be non-refundable, non-returnable, or have shorter warranties.

• Year-round sales

Shopping online has changed how stores offer deals and discounts. Almost often, you'll discover seemingly cheaper prices.

Though you don't have to wait all year for a big sale, it might be hard to tell if you're getting a good deal when everything is always marked down. It is crucial to track and compare pricing to see whether or not you are actually saving money.

• Seasonal demand

Demand is not equal for all consumer goods and timing plays an important role. One example is the Valentine’s Day demand for flowers. They’re usually more expensive in the run up to the day and become cheaper once it’s over.

Come clearance, the price and availability of the things you want may vary depending on the type of product.

The verdict: Partly true.

Deals can lead you to buy things you don’t want or need no matter when you shop. But when the holiday rush is over and things have calmed down, it might be easier to think more clearly while shopping.

You may have a better idea of what you really need or want after all the Christmas gifts have been opened and the frenzy has died down.

However, there are things to consider when deciding whether an item is worth the splurge now or if it’s better to wait a little while longer.

If you’re sitting out the holiday shopping this year, there are other smart ways to make use of your Christmas bonus.
